Sustainability – our path to the future

Being part of our society, we, Messe München, are dedicated to our social and ecological responsibilities. Therefore, sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy.

We are committed ourselves to become CO2 neutral by 2030 - 20 years ahead of the goal set out in the Paris Climate Agreement and 10 years earlier than targeted by the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA).

For this purpose, we have developed a sustainability strategy tailored to the exhibition industry. As part of our holistic sustainability program, we continuously initiate projects, which aim to reduce the CO2 emissions of Messe München.

We strive for sustainability for ourselves and our customers. We are actively promoting sustainability at our events.

Acting sustainably. The measures taken by EXPO REAL.

As one of the most important real estate fairs in Europe, we not only want to set an example, but point the way.

Our priorities:

Climate-friendly stand construction

  • We produce our stages, lounges and other EXPO REAL special areas sustainably and from resource-saving materials. Some of the stand constructions are stored every year to be used again for the next EXPO REAL.
  • We also use the woodï stand system from our partner meplan. Smart, regional logistics consequently reduce ecological costs. Thanks to its modularity and clever circularity, woodï makes stand construction more sustainable than ever before.

Eco-friendly infrastructure

  • The EXPO REAL ticket includes free use of public transport to and from Messe München on the day of your visit. By connecting directly to public transport, we enable and promote an environmentally friendly journey.
  • Climate-friendly travel: The EXPO REAL Rail Special Event Ticket enables you to travel low-emission
  • We promote travelling with electric vehicles by providing almost 110 charging stations on the exhibition grounds.
  • Sustainable waste management: we dispose of waste resulting from construction and dismantling as commercial waste for recycling—recyclable materials can thus be returned to the economic cycle.

Sustainable advertising materials

  • We reduce our print circulations and are constantly optimizing our digital advertising media. Via our EXPO REAL app you can search for exhibitors, conference program or other participants before and at the trade fair.
  • For our printed advertising materials, we only use FSC-certified recycled paper.
  • We deliberately cooperate with printing companies that commit to the principle of sustainability.

Valuable partnerships

  • For our catering partners, the focus is on regional and seasonal goods and a sustainable scope with resources. They actively fight food waste and offer a comprehensive range of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Messe München exhibition grounds: Progressive, sustainable, environmentally friendly

• 220,000 square meters of green space, around 2,500 trees, green hall exterior walls and 71,000 square meters of green roof - our exhibition grounds are literally "green".

• The photovoltaic system on the roofs of our exhibition halls supports the supply of green electricity on the exhibition grounds. It is one of the world’s largest rooftop photovoltaic systems.• Non-produced electricity is purchased as 100% green electricity.

• Replacement of conventional lighting in all exhibition halls, in the three main entrances and the exhibition centre by the end of 2026.

• Heat supply of the exhibition grounds via geothermal energy.

• Supply of the trade fair lake with rainwater and groundwater.

ESG real estate as a trade fair sector: What do the ESG requirements mean for the real estate industry?

Whether for institutional investors, fund providers and asset managers as well as for portfolio holders or project developers - the topic of ESG has gained enormous importance in the real estate industry across all asset classes.
